Jack White Writes Poem For Detroit

Jack White of The White Stripes has penned a poem about his hometown of Detroit, showing how much he lives the city - despite previously speaking negatively of his birthplace in 2006 to the Associated Press.

The poem is to be published in this forthcoming Sunday's edition of the Detroit Free Press and White says of his latest work, "those expressions of mine have never been a representation of my feelings about Detroit the city, a town that I have strong feelings about... nor were they expressions about its citizens."

Jack also went on to say the poem is based on the "Detroit that is in my heart. The home that encapsulates and envelops those who are truly blessed with the experience of living within its boundaries."

Val Kilmer - Kilmer Replaces Arnett As Kit Over Truck Ad Mix Up

VAL KILMER was handed the job of voicing the new KNIGHT RIDER car when producers learned funnyman WILL ARNETT had a truck commercial deal that would prevent him from playing K.I.T. on TV.

Arrested Development star Arnett won the role on the upcoming TV remake of David Hasselhoff's speedy 1980s series, but was forced to step down because of his ties to GMC Trucks.

And Kilmer, a fan of the original series, was asked to step in and become the motor mouth of the project.

The Doors star says, "Will Arnett was seen on a car commercial and the producers found out that his voice was owned by that car company. They found out by accident.

"So I get the call from my agent, who asked me if I wanted to be the voice of K.I.T. I remembered that show and it was fun when I was a kid, so I said, 'Sure, should I do a tape?'

"My agent said, 'No, it's not an audition, they're offering it to you.' I had to be on set at 7am the next morning.

Matthew Mcconaughey - Mcconaugheys Brother Hell Be A Great Dad

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY's brother ROOSTER is glad the actor is a first-time father to a little boy - insisting they are easier to nurture than girls.

The Fool's Gold actor became a dad to Levi Alves MCConaughey on Monday night (07Jul08), his first child with girlfriend Camila Alves.

And the star is said to be overjoyed with his new son, after his brother Rooster told him it's best to have a boy first time as they are tougher.

Rooster tells People.com, "It's good to have a boy the first time 'round!"

"You can get away with dropping 'em a couple times, and they'll still be okay. Can't really do that with a little girl."

Provocative "Candide" hits London, divides critics

LONDON (Reuters) - A provocative production of Leonard Bernstein's musical "Candide" has come to London and sharply divided the critics.

Based on the satirical classic by the 18th-century writer and philosopher Voltaire, Robert Carsen and Ian Burton's version of the operetta sets much of the action in 1950s America, where technological advances and victory in war engendered unbounded confidence.

The Westphalia of the original becomes "West Failure," the auto-da-fe scene features dancing Ku Klux Klan members, Cunegonde becomes a diamond-laden Marilyn Monroe figure and Candide falls victim to a greedy Texas oil baron.

But it also tackles the contemporary world, including a scene where world leaders George Bush, Tony Blair, Silvio Berlusconi, Jacques Chirac and Vladimir Putin perform a drunken dance dressed only in their underwear.

And the closing number, "We Must Make Our Garden Grow," is sung against a giant backdrop of oil slicks, forest fires, over-crowded refugee camps and melting ice caps.

Just as Voltaire sought to ridicule Leibniz's theory of optimism by testing his characters with natural disasters, war and religious persecution, Bernstein set out to question modern America, and in particular McCarthyism.

Carsen updated the 1950s version for the 21st century, underlining the lasting appeal of Voltaire's masterpiece, which became a bestseller when it first appeared in 1759.

Now showing at London's English National Opera, the work originally performed at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris has drawn mixed reviews.

"Carsen's sardonic but overstrained take on the tale ... is a horrible mixture of scattergun and sledgehammer: too many targets, too many 'topical' poor-taste one-liners, far too little subtlety," wrote Richard Morrison in the Times.

George Clooney splits from girlfriend

George Clooney has reportedly split from his girlfriend of one year, Sarah Larson.
According to People magazine, a source confirmed that the pair had decided to go their separate ways.
Clooney's representative Stan Rosenfield refused to confirm the rumours, saying: "We do not comment on George's personal life."
Clooney has previously dismissed speculation that he was planning to propose to Larson, who was the first girlfriend that he ever brought to the Oscars with him.
